Smarter Demand, Stronger Grid

Prepared by Dean Lombard from Energesis with support from the Energy Efficiency Council, this report explores how demand flexibility can play a greater role in the electricity system.

The paper explores the barriers and enablers to increasing demand flexibility in the National Electricity Market (NEM). This includes considering consumer preferences, characteristics of appliances, market mechanisms and other factors; and policy recommendations to improve visibility and forecasting and facilitate greater inclusion of demand flexibility into the energy system, such as tweaks to market mechanisms and regulatory changes.

Together, these measures would enable a greater number of flexible resources to participate in the market more effectively, strengthening system reliability and reducing costs for all consumers.
