Global electrification push to boost energy security, cut emissions with 35% by 2035 electrification target

Australia and Türkiye have used a global climate summit in Germany to call for the world to accelerate the rate of global electrification to boost energy security while cutting emissions.

In an address to the Bonn Climate Conference on Tuesday, the COP President-designate, Murat Kurum, committed to building a coalition of countries focused on raising the proportion of energy services delivered by electricity from just over 20% to 35% by 2035.

Speaking at a side event co-hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency and Australia’s Energy Efficiency Council, incoming COP31 President of Negotiations, Chris Bowen, backed the call, saying that electrification can both cut emissions and boost energy security by reducing the world’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Energy Efficiency Council CEO Luke Menzel said the intervention from Bowen and
Kurum reflected growing global momentum to put electrification at the heart of global climate efforts.

“It doesn’t matter what question you ask.”

“How do we improve energy security? How do we boost energy affordability? How do we cut emissions?”

“The answer is the same: electrify.”

“Electrify transport, electrify households, electrify businesses, and power them with renewable energy.”

Menzel said that a big new push on electrification in Australia is a no brainer given our vast renewable resources.

“Australians have invested in solar and batteries in droves. We now need to focus on
getting more Aussies into EVs and making homes and businesses all electric so we can power more of the Aussie economy with local renewable energy.”

“That will cut bills, boost our energy sovereignty and reduce our exposure to global energy shocks.”
