Lily D’Ambrosio – A tireless advocate for demand-side action in the energy transition
Following the announcement of her retirement from politics, the Energy Efficiency Council commends Lily D’Ambrosio on her work to strengthen Victorian energy efficiency and electrification policy.
As the longest‑serving climate and energy minister in Australia, Minister D’Ambrosio has been involved in many facets of Victoria’s energy transition, from transitioning ageing coal facilities to unlocking the benefits of modern, renewable generators. She has also played a significant leadership role on the demand side of the energy system.
As minister in the state with the highest residential gas use in the country, D’Ambrosio took seriously the task of transitioning Victorian households to cheaper-to-run, lower-emissions, all-electric homes, championing household electrification as a cornerstone of Victoria’s energy future. Under her stewardship, programs supporting efficient electric appliances and other home upgrades have helped Victorians save thousands of dollars a year while reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.
The EEC’s CEO, Luke Menzel, said “In over a decade as energy minister, Lily D’Ambrosio helped navigate the state through an unprecedented transformation from a highly centralised, fossil fuel-based electricity system to one that is increasingly renewable, distributed and electrified.
She can be proud of a substantial record of delivery in a challenging and highly contested area of public policy.”
A key achievement of her final year in office was the return of insulation to the Victorian Energy Upgrades program, reinstating a critical and proven measure to reduce energy waste, improve household energy performance, and help manage peak demand.
